We had one last walk with Zeus before we retreated inside to wait out the night. The phone hasn’t stopped all day and as far as we can tell everyone we know is as well prepared as they can be. Down the beach front the water was washing up to the road, but as the Continue reading

And wait…
We turned the front of the house into a car yard. They provide more protection for our big glass doors and the recalcitrant roller door. Plus the added advantage of a quick escape if required… And then a man and a dog need a nap to recover 🙂
Hurry up and wait…
The windows are taped, the pool fence is wrapped, the garage roller door is braced. We’ve dropped off our valuable documents to friends with a storm bunker in their house and now we wait. On the drive back I took a photo of the Cook Highway (main road north out of Cairns) completely devoid of Continue reading
Morning before
Have just come back from a walk on the beach and you can see the outer wall of Yasi to the south east. The wind’s from the south as well which suggests Yasi is already to below of us. Innisfail may well be the worst hit again and my thoughts are with those people.

Not a breath of wind outside… No flying foxes scattered across the sky while we had dinner and the Rainbow Bee-eaters who have been resident in our trees outside have vanished as well. Time for bed, then an early start tomorrow!
The coming of Yasi
For as long as there’s power I plan on blogging and twittering the goings-on in Cairns as Cyclone Yasi bears down on the coast. No-one knows that answer and the authorities Continue reading
Cunning Camouflage
I know, I know. We always claim things are bigger in NQ, but today’s little visitor in the garden is the largest stick insect I’ve seen 🙂 Its camouflage was so good it almost fell victim to my clippers…
Architectural masterpiece
The nest is complete. All she needs now is her family. It even has a little awning which is handy in the tropics 🙂
New mum on the block
It’s easy to spot a new mum when Sunbirds start nesting. She’s the one building her nest on the bottom of a hanging basket and using a piece of scrappy plant to anchor it instead of the string provided by her house keeper… Lucky for her there’s an interfering human 🙂 I think she may Continue reading
Tropical Writers Festival
Wow! I’ve just had a fabulous (but exhausting) weekend at the Tropical Writers Festival in Cairns. There is something very uplifting about spending an entire weekend with people who are passionate about books. As always the differences in opinions about the merits of one book versus another were intriguing and the Biggest Book Club certainly Continue reading
